Walt Disney World lost and found

Image
This week we take a look at Walt Disney World.  Every day an average of 210 pairs of sunglasses are turned in and, since 1971, an estimated 1.65 million pairs of glasses have found their way into the “lost” bin. On an annual basis, Lost and Found cast members collect more than 6,000 cell phones, 3,500 digital cameras, 18,000 hats, and 7,500 autograph books.  According to long-time Lost and Found staffers, the most unusual items turned in have been a glass eye, a prosthetic leg, and a potty trainer.  Some other fun facts: Covering nearly 40 square miles, Walt Disney World Resort is about the size of San Francisco or two Manhattan islands. Of the nearly 25,000 acres, a third is designated as conservation land. It also takes more than 70,000 Cast Members in Central Florida to create the magic at the Vacation Kingdom. That makes Walt Disney World Resort the largest single-site employer in the United States. I found all these on Walt Disney World News which currently only offers information

Age at first marriage

This week we take a look at the average and median age at first marriage in the United States and parts of the UK.  Let's start off with England and Wales. The average age at first marriage has changed considerably over time. As the 19th century was coming to an end, the average age for newlyweds was about 25 for men and shy of 24 for women, with an upwards trend. That trend was interrupted during World War II, with a sudden deep, when young couples rushed to marry before the men were sent into battle. That also led to a divorce boom  shortly after the war.  After the war ended the rising age trend of the pre-war years was inverted and reached its lowest point during the late sixties to early seventies. Since then, the average age at marriage is only rising. In less than 50 years' time, the average age at first marriage has increased by a staggering 10 years and it has surpassed 30 for both males and females.  As fo

Share of Population Using Facebook

This week we take a look at the share of population using Facebook.  Facebook announced it has over 2.7 billion monthly active users on its Q2 2020 earnings report. It passed the 1 billion milestone back in 2016 and the 2 billion one, in just under a year later. Now it's on track to 3 billion monthly active users and I thought it would be interesting to explore the share of population using Facebook in each country.  The Asia-Pacific region has a very strong Facebook presence. Thailand is leading the pack with over 88% of its population having a Facebook account. Countries with over 75% of their population using Facebook include Taiwan with 87.2%, Malaysia with 85.5%, the Philippines with 82.5%, Vietnam with 79.7%, and New Zealand with 77%. To contrast this, the only country in Europe to pass 75%, is Sweden, with 75.9% of its entire population having an

Only 1% of friendships that start when you are 13, last even 5 years

Only 1% of friendships that start when you are 13 years old, last even 5 years. That's according to a study  on adolescent friendships conducted  by researchers from Florida Atlantic University.  More specifically, fewer than 1 in 4 friendships that started in Grade 7 (12-13 years old) were maintained across the next school year. Fewer than 1 in 10 friendships that started in Grade 7 survived the transition from middle school to high school. And just 1% of friendships that began in the 7th grade continued to the 12th grade (17-18 years old). The study's findings suggest that differences in social and academic behavior anticipate the dissolution of friendships across middle school and high school. Friends who differed on individual characteristics such as peer acceptance and physical aggression, as well as on teacher-rate
